Widows Cooperative Programme

Widows Programme

For widows in Nigeria, the line between prosperity and poverty is very thin. One of the country's greatest social challenges is the plight of women who have lost their husbands.  With few legal rights, the death of a husband can also mean losing their homes, their children and their dignity. The Sir Emeka Offor Foundation features a programme to help widows in their struggle to remain independent and respected in society. Community-based projects offer human capacity building and skills acquisition in the production of palm kernel oil, training of hair dressers and tailors and assisting petty traders to become registered business owners. The Foundation has formed widow’s cooperatives, to allow women  to be economically self-sufficient and able to provide for their children.

Empowerment

Youth Empowerment ProgrammesThrough micro-finance grants and loans to industrious, low income earners, the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation empowers youth to shape a more productive life. One such programme is the motorcycle transit venture. Motorcycles are purchased and registered at the foundation's expense.  Selected candidates are then given fifteen months to repay the cost and proceeds are invested to provide motorcycles for additional candidates the following year. The Foundation advises participants how to plan and manage their businesses under this successful program. Several have been able to expand their transportation enterprises to include commercial buses and additional employees, thus helping others to help themselves.  The programme has touched over 500 people, each with his own story of how a single, simple gift can make ideas grow.

Health Services Programme

Health ServicesIt is difficult to be a productive member of society when you are sick.  That is why the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation has invested in health services to make the community a better place to live – and a place to live better.  Free rural medical consultations allow those who rarely receive treatment to see a highly trained doctor.  This permanent health post gives people security and comfort that medical assistance is always nearby.
A self-contained 25-room ward is under construction at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu to further serve patients in the Eastern region.
Nigeria is one of the few nations where polio exists, mostly affecting poor and distressed populations in parts of Northern Nigeria.  In order to render this crippling disease extinct, the SEOF donated $250,000 dollars to Rotary International to assist in its Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The fight against Glaucoma is another health care initiative of the foundation. Acutely aware of the hidden danger Glaucoma poses to growing portion of world’s population, the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation established a €100, 000 Glaucoma research grant at the Department of Ophthalmology University of Mainz, Germany and also established a Nigerian fellowship for Cataract Surgery and Glaucoma Management at the same University.

As part of its emergency health contribution to individuals internally displaced by flood in October 2012, the SEOF organized medical missions to camps in Anambra State and donated food and basic necessities, including bags of rice and beans as well as toiletries worth millions of naira.

Education Programme

Education ProgrammesThe Sir Emeka Offor Foundation believes that education is the cornerstone of our future.  A multi-facted approach to education includes a scholarship programme that provides comprehensive university scholarships to academically gifted but economically disadvantaged students. To date, over 120 scholarships have been granted. When a recipient graduates first in his or her class, the student will receive a car and will be offered full-time employment within the Chrome Group of Companies.

An aggressive programme to build model schools and classrooms and furnish them with access to the internet and modern equipment enables students to learn in a conducive environment.  The Sir Emeka Offor Foundation strives to become a model for development efforts across Nigeria in its effort to develop the talents of students to allow them to contribute to society.
